Until 150 years ago, the common believe was that Ancient Jerusalem was situated within what is today called the Old City. The walls of the Old City however were built by Sultan Suleiman the Great about 450 years ago. Parts of the extended First Temple period Jerusalem in the times of Hezekiah as well as a great deal of the Second Temple period lies within the Old City Walls. But the origins of ancient Biblical Jerusalem lie 400 meters to the South, outside the Old City walls. When David conquered the Jebusite city, Jebus, the Bible says he called it the City of David.

Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion–which is the City of David.

2 Samuel 5:7

When he refers to the city in his Psalms however, he calls it Jerusalem, as it is generally referred to in the Bible. The whole First Temple period in the times of David and Solomon, is situated on this hill South of Temple Mount, and except for Temple Mount where the Temple stood, the origins of Zion lies outside the walls of the Old City. All the current excavations are done according to the highest standards by the Israel Antiquities Authority. City of David – Ancient Jerusalem is an official heritage site.
